A fresh update for Windows 11 from Microsoft is causing disruptions to the traditional version of the Outlook email application. Just weeks ago, the legacy Outlook encountered difficulties accessing protected messages.
Reports from Neowin indicate that multiple individuals have reported the most recent Windows 11 patch, identified as KB5074109, rendering the classic Outlook entirely non-functional. Feedback from participants in a dedicated Microsoft discussion forum reveals that the app now experiences sudden halts post-update and fails to retain email content.
Removing the KB5074109 patch appears to resolve these issues, a solution verified by technology firm Suncoast Information Systems within that same Microsoft forum.
The root cause does not stem from the Outlook software alone but from how the operating system now handles data stored in cloud services like OneDrive and alternatives such as Dropbox, as explained by Microsoft.
Microsoft elaborates that certain setups where Outlook keeps PST files in OneDrive locations may lead to the program becoming frozen and unable to resume without ending the task via Task Manager or rebooting the machine. Furthermore, dispatched messages could vanish from the Sent Items section, while already retrieved attachments might need re-downloading.
For those relying on the older Outlook variant and facing glitches following the January Windows 11 release, options include reverting the system update or adopting the updated Outlook version. Microsoft continues efforts to develop a permanent solution.
