Microsoft's latest Windows 11 versions now accommodate screens capable of refresh rates surpassing 1,000Hz, although practical implementations of such technology remain mostly in conceptual stages.
The company rolled out builds 26100.8106 and 26200.8106 to the Release Preview Channel on Thursday, adding built-in compatibility for displays that indicate refresh rates above 1,000Hz. Mark Rejhon from Blur Busters attributed the development to his efforts and suggested the upper limit could reach 5,000Hz.
PC gamers are familiar with the ongoing balance in gaming setups involving greater resolutions and graphical fidelity, elevated frame rates, higher monitor refresh speeds, and AI-driven frame creation that influences visible frames. Ideally, the screen's refresh rate aligns with the GPU's output to prevent issues such as tearing. Motion blur represents another distinct visual problem that diminishes with shorter frame rendering durations. Elevated refresh rates result in reduced frame times, leading to less input lag.
This move by Microsoft extends the potential for refresh rates that typically max out around 500Hz. Tom's Hardware reported discovering a 1,080Hz panel toward the close of 2025, but it operated at that speed only in 720p resolution.
Blur Busters praised the inclusion from Microsoft and noted that screen producers have 2,000Hz models slated for release around 2030. The organization referenced an unverified communication from a Microsoft insider indicating possible 5,000Hz compatibility in Windows 11 24H2 and subsequent updates. According to Blur Busters, 1,000Hz nearly eliminates motion blur on 1080p displays such as tablets, while 10,000Hz would eradicate it entirely on high-field-of-view, retina-quality screens.
Additionally, the update permits USB4 docking stations—comparable to Thunderbolt 4 equivalents—to enter an extremely energy-efficient idle mode when the computer is dormant, which conserves electricity and better maintains display orientation for portrait-configured monitors.
Further enhancements encompass better functionality for biometric fingerprint scanners, support for renaming files in File Explorer using voice input, uniform presentation of device information in Settings, and the option to toggle Smart App Control without requiring a fresh installation.
