While building apps for web browsers remains a common practice, Puter elevates the concept significantly. This web-based platform delivers an entire operating system featuring a visual desktop interface and pre-installed programs. Its creators describe it as a cloud-based OS.
To try it out, visit the Puter site, and it will load directly into the OS desktop, complete with dual toolbars. The lower left includes a start menu similar to Windows that lists installed programs. Additional icons provide entry to the file manager, built-in application marketplace, coding utilities, and controls for your device's camera or audio input. The upper toolbar conceals itself out of view.
To reveal the full top bar, hover your cursor over the central minimize icon. The leftmost symbol launches a panel showing system details, such as storage capacity, along with options for user profiles and protection features.
Under the 'Personalization' section, options allow modifying the wallpaper and adjusting UI colors. The 'Language' menu lets you pick your preferred tongue. At the right end, access individual configurations. The 'Save Session' feature enables account creation by choosing a user ID, supplying an email, and establishing a secure passphrase.
A standout element is the third icon from the left, which triggers a dialog box. Grab the URL listed in the 'Invitation Link' field and share it with contacts. When someone signs up for Puter using your link, you gain an extra 1GB of storage at no cost.
Puter comes equipped with a diverse array of built-in software. The catalog includes numerous games, alongside resources for building custom applications. Among them is Photopea, an online alternative to Photoshop. Those interested in running Puter locally on their machine can access setup guides, including Windows-specific terminal instructions, via the project's GitHub repository.
