An overlooked capability in Windows 10 and Windows 11 designed for better resource management falls short in terms of memory efficiency. Known as Delivery Optimization, this tool aims to streamline the acquisition of Microsoft updates and applications by distributing the download workload across several devices in a network.

According to Microsoft's description, Delivery Optimization helps lower bandwidth usage through collaborative downloading of Windows updates, upgrades, and app packages among connected devices. However, the company has not perfected this system, leading to increased strain on hardware resources as it operates.

Reports from users highlight its drawbacks. One individual, noted by Neowin, observed that Delivery Optimization gradually consumes vast amounts of RAM and remains idle afterward. Additionally, Reddit contributor Niff_Naff conducted experiments revealing that the service steadily devours significant portions of available system memory.

Users can disable this feature through the Windows Settings menu. Go to Windows Update, then select Delivery Optimization, and deselect the option to permit downloads from other machines.

With this adjustment, more RAM should become available for essential tasks, potentially improving overall system responsiveness.
