Microsoft has faced backlash lately over the opaque labeling of numerous drivers in Windows 11.
Drivers on systems often appear with titles such as 'Microsoft Corporation – Driver Update' plus a version identifier, offering little utility. These labels fail to indicate the associated hardware, like a printer, camera, speaker, or microphone, or the driver's specific purpose.
Windows Latest reports that Microsoft is addressing the feedback and aims to enhance driver name clarity moving forward. A spokesperson from the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) team noted that efforts are underway, though implementation could take time owing to operational challenges: 'We are still working on exactly what metadata we can get, ensuring partners (e.g., OEMs) publish that metadata with their drivers, then standardizing it and changing titles. Unfortunately, no ETA yet.'
