On May 4, 2026, Microsoft announced that a glitch causing security alerts to malfunction when launching RDP files has been resolved in the optional KB5036361 update for Windows 11, released on April 30. Users seeking an immediate solution ahead of the May update can apply this patch directly through Windows Update.

In the initial report dated April 28, 2026, complaints surfaced about Remote Desktop functionality after the release of Windows 11's recent security patches, with Microsoft verifying the defect and recommending temporary solutions.

The patches in question, KB503769 and KB503052 from April 2026, aimed to patch security flaws and enhance features but have triggered visual glitches for certain users.

Specifically, KB503769 implemented new safeguards for Remote Desktop sessions to counter the CVE-2026-26151 flaw, which posed risks from tampered RDP files.

Microsoft explains the glitch: Post-installation, the cautionary prompt for RDP files may render improperly under specific conditions.

This malfunction typically arises in multi-monitor setups where screens have varying scaling levels, such as 100% on one and 125% on the other, resulting in overlaid text or obscured controls that hinder readability and usability.

Such disruptions prove especially disruptive in corporate settings where Remote Desktop supports routine operations.

As a stopgap until the permanent correction arrives, Microsoft advises an alternative approach: Navigate using keyboard inputs rather than mouse actions. It mentions two options, though only the keyboard method is detailed here.

Additionally, some organizations continue facing BitLocker access denials and startup cycles on HP and Dell systems post-April updates, with no confirmed link to the Remote Desktop problem.

Microsoft is actively probing the matter, anticipating a full resolution in a future release.

Note: Windows 11 Home users may lack access to Pro edition perks; compare Home and Pro versions for details. Upgrades are available at a discount in the PCWorld Software Store for $59, down from $99.
