A recent Microsoft Edge update has modified the operation of its integrated password manager, as noted by Neowin. Friday's release of version 145 for Edge discontinues the use of master passwords within this feature.

Edge users can no longer set up fresh master passwords to secure access to the password manager. Those with existing master passwords may keep relying on them temporarily, extending into several additional months. The change represents a significant push encouraging adoption of Windows Hello as the primary password handling method.

Notifications will alert users that their current master passwords remain valid only up to June 4, 2026. Beyond that point, password manager access will demand device-based verification using Windows Hello.
