Google has introduced a new option in Google Drive that allows users to assign expiration dates to permissions on shared files and folders, according to Digital Trends. This capability extends to shared drives as well as the personal 'My Drive' section, enabling temporary permissions that are automatically withdrawn once the specified date passes.

For 'My Drive' specifically, when temporary editing permissions end, they do not vanish entirely; rather, access defaults to the standard permission level set for the containing folder, which is typically view-only.

Users can configure these expiration dates through the standard sharing interface available on the web version and the Android Drive application. iOS support is not yet available. The rollout of this functionality is occurring gradually to different user groups.
