Reports are emerging that Microsoft may be pushing involuntary upgrades to Windows 11's newest editions, prompting widespread discussion. IT specialist Günther Born has documented multiple such incidents on his personal blog.

Numerous instances describe computers on Windows 11 version 24H2 unexpectedly shifting to 25H2 without user approval. Additionally, one account details a transition from Windows 10 directly to Windows 11.

These surprise updates occur at various times, including during nighttime or broad daylight hours. A recent story highlighted a Reddit contributor whose machine advanced to Windows 11 mid-shower.

Born labels the frequency as beyond mere chance and suggests an intentional mechanism or glitch might be at play. Suspicions point toward Microsoft actively deploying these upgrades, though technical errors remain a possibility.

For those opting into Windows 11, the Pro edition stands out as advisable, with details covered in our dedicated guide. Access the Windows 11 upgrade via the PCWorld Software Store at a discounted rate of $59, down from $99.

A potential explanation involves Microsoft's enablement packages, designed to streamline version transitions. For the jump from 24H2 to 25H2, the KB5054156 package facilitates the process.

Given the overlapping foundational code between versions, the package simply unlocks the updated features. This approach avoids extended download and setup periods, and it's expected to feature prominently in the forthcoming Windows 11 26H2 release.

Users impacted may have inadvertently obtained the 25H2 enablement package, leading to automatic activation of the upgrade. The precise trigger remains uncertain, especially since many confirmed they had turned off new update installations.

Current assessments debate if these represent random user errors, like accidental clicks, or deliberate actions by Microsoft. Notably, no official acknowledgment exists of a software flaw causing 25H2 activations.

Users can reverse recent upgrades easily, rolling back specific Windows 11 changes or reverting to Windows 10 if acted upon within 10 days.

To avoid stealth installations, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Pause updates. Monitor this option periodically, as pauses last up to five weeks at most.
